Art is our weapon. Culture is a form of resistance. -Shirin Neshat, MFA 1983

Art is a place for a culture to figure itself out. UC Berkeley’s Department of Art Practice prepares students for professional careers in contemporary arts and visual cultures. With a focus on rigorous practical, conceptual, and critical studies in the context of a world-renowned public research university, students develop a deep and interdisciplinary understanding of art's practices and circulations in a global scope.

teaches in dedicated studios for 12 different media, ranging from Drawing to VR. Courses in the department lead to three degrees: A Bachelor of Arts, a Minor in Art Practice, and a Master of Fine Arts degree. Critical and conceptual studies leverage studio practices to illuminate the dynamics of arts and visual cultures, their enormous impacts on communities and identities. Impactful alumni, a dedicated staff and an internationally acclaimed faculty of exhibiting artists provide a lifelong network of career support and help to make sense of the world through art.

Art is a team effort.
-Ian Cheng, BA 2006

IN THE SPIRIT OF THE BROADER INSTITUTION,
the department of Art Practice at UC Berkeley is committed to educating students for the contemporary world with a focus on global, sociopolitical and cultural change, including new tools, methods and cultures for emerging practices in art. We pride ourselves in equipping our students with the tools to thrive as artists today. Our world class faculty and staff provide students with the technical skills and critical thinking abilities so necessary to artistically navigate our increasingly tumultuous world. Moreover, as one of the most highly regarded public research universities in the world, students in the department of art practice are given access to some of the foremost scholars in nearly every field of academic study. Students are given the opportunity to take classes within the wider university in whichever fields they find interesting, and are encouraged to bring what they learn into the studio. This fosters an environment for a truly interdisciplinary form of artistic inquiry, something incredibly valuable today. Educating the next generation of artists is of the utmost importance, and we continually strive to graduate students with the critical making skills so vital to being a contemporary artist.
