PRINTMAKING

THE PRINTMAKING PROGRAM at UC Berkeley has an esteemed history that dates back to late 1950’s in which it was originally designed by painter, printmaker and UC Berkeley faculty, Karl Kasten. Over the course of the next 60+ years, the printmaking faculty has included: George Miyasaki, Shane Weare, Barbara Foster, Sylvia Lark, Mary Lovelace O'neal, Enrique Chagoya, Don Farnsworth, and current Continuing Lecturer Randy Hussong (since 1994).

Students who study printmaking in the department explore both traditional and experimental printmaking techniques that span from stone and plate lithography, intaglio, screen printing, relief, monotype to digital and photo processes. Students are encouraged to develop work that engages and critical thinking and conceptual ideas.

The print studios provide a working environment for students to learn collaboratively, develop their creative process through direct assistance and engage in critical discussion with peers and instructors. Located on the second floor of Kroeber Hall, the printmaking program has two studios. The lithography studio has three presses, a large graining sink, and a wide variety of lithographic stones. The intaglio studio is equipped with three etching presses including a large American-French press, two hot plates, an aquatint box, a ventilated cleaning hood, and a separate acid room equipped to etch large plates. Three screen printing stations are available for water-based printing, along with a spray booth and a separate area for coating and storing light-sensitive screens. The printmaking program has its own digital facilities and a large NUARC flip-top exposure unit for photographic lithography, intaglio, and screen printing processes. The facilities also have a risograph machine for experimental techniques and cross-disciplinary publications and text based explorations.
